don't steal my bandwidth

Sep 18 2002

Attention Rex Manning fans, to your left you will notice a shoplifter being chased by our night manager Lucas. This young man will be caught, dipped in a vat of hot oil and served to our first one hundred customers. Just another tasty treat from the gang here at [kellegous.com]. [?]

Lesson #1: Bandwidth costs money. If you paste a link to an image you saw on someone's site (as a few have done to mine) into a message on a message board, you are stealing that person's limited bandwidth.

Lesson #2: The person who owns the server will win; you will be embarrassed.

But, of course, those of us who have space on servers are all too willing to have a laugh at your expense if you insist on “hot-linking”. Take for instance poor JeffGMc, who has just purchased a Canon G2 and wishes to tell all his buddies over at www.bigsoccer.com. Unfortunately, JeffGMc searched for a picture of his brand new camera and found such an image in my archives. Well, by sheer coincidence, I decided I didn't like that filename anymore so I changed it to something else. Then, under the original filename, I placed a more fitting image that will really impress all of JeffGMc's buddies.
