Clique was proposed and prototyped by Mat Laibowitz, Mimi Liu, and Kelly Norton as part of an assignment in Hiroshi Ishii's Tangible Intefaces course.

CONCEPT

• MATERIAL STATEMENT OF FRIENDSHIP

  The phenomena of friendship bracelets and pins, both of which were incredibly popular in the eighties, demonstrate the power of a hand crafted token to be passed as a symbol of friendship or love. The crafting of each is distinct usually portraying characteristics of the relationship.

• PHYSICAL TARGET FOR EMOTIONAL EXPRESSION

  Teddy bears, voodoo dolls, and even photos taped to dart boards have provided us with physical outlets which allow us to physically express our spontaneous emotions for an individual.

• AMBIENT REPRESENTATION OF ONE'S SOCIAL NETWORK

  Social networking services, like Orkut and Friendster, show a growing fascination with understanding one's social environment or network. Awareness of one's social network is thought to bring a greater sense of security, combating natural feelings of anonymity.
